Protocols that keep you confident off-road—whether chasing vert or exploring new singletrack.

1) Weather & Light Calls

Check temp, wind, precip, daylight. Carry a light if you’re within 90 minutes of sunset. Avoid ridge lines with lightning risk. Adjust pacing by effort using Mindful Pacing.

2) Layering & Pack

Base: wicking. Mid: light insulation. Shell: wind/water. Add buff, gloves, and an emergency blanket for alpine or shoulder seasons. Keep 500–700ml per hour with electrolytes; see Fueling.

3) Quick Nav Checks

Download offline maps, note bailout points, set a turnaround time. Confirm junctions by terrain features, not only GPX lines. Preload weather alerts.

4) Safety Signals

Whistle: three blasts for help. Share route + ETA with a friend; use delayed sharing if solo. Carry ID and a small first-aid strip.

5) Footing & Flow

Shorten stride on descents, eyes 3–5 steps ahead. Hike steep grades to save quads; jog runnable sections to keep rhythm. Strengthen with Strength + Mobility to stay stable.

Simple drills that keep you safe and fast.

Navigation Drills

  • Breadcrumb Check: Every 15-20 min confirm map + last landmark.
  • Turnback Rule: At 40% of planned time, set a hard turnaround.
  • Night Prep: 10-15 min headlamp jog weekly to test beam + batteries.
  • Match with pacing cues when visibility is low.

Kit Builder

  • Essentials: Soft flasks, electrolytes, buff, gloves, whistle, phone in bag.
  • Weather Swap: Add shell if wind >20 km/h or temps <10°C at ridge.
  • Fuel Pairing: 30-60g carbs/h + 300-800mg sodium/h (see fueling).
  • Footing: Use 3-5mm lugs for mud; 4-6mm rock plate for techy trails.

Incident Flow

  1. Stop, assess breathing, sip 2-3 mouthfuls water.
  2. Layer up, mark location (screenshot/map pin).
  3. Text contact with ETA; if no service, move to higher ground for signal.
  4. Slow walk-out; if injured, splint with poles and wrap buff for compression.
